Question 4 / 30

Wie is het staatshoofd van Nederland?

Who is the head of state of the Netherlands?

Which exam do you actually need?

There are five different Dutch exams and most people are told the wrong one. Three questions and you will know which is yours, what it costs, and where to register.

  1. Where are you right now?

  2. Why do you need Dutch?

  3. What level do you need to reach?

One road, four gates

Most people meet these exams one at a time, years apart. Seeing the whole road early makes each gate easier to plan for.

  1. Before you move

    Basisexamen inburgering buitenland

    A1

Three parts — KNS, Lezen, Spreken — taken at a Dutch embassy or consulate. You need this before the MVV application. €150 in total, €50 per part, results within eight weeks.

  2. After you arrive

    Inburgeringsexamen A2

    A2

Reading, listening, writing, speaking and KNM. This is the older route, the fallback level under the 2021 law, and the minimum for naturalisation.

  3. The standard route

    Inburgeringsexamen B1

    B1

The default under the Wet inburgering 2021. Same five parts, one level higher. Dropping back to A2 is only allowed after 600 hours of certified coursework.

  4. For work and study

    Staatsexamen NT2 I & II

    B1 / B2

Programma I for mbo 3–4. Programma II for hbo, university and professional registration. Four skills, no KNM.

The exam is in Dutch. The explanation does not have to be.

Nearly every practice book in this market is written entirely in Dutch — for people who are, by definition, still learning Dutch. When you get a question wrong, the explanation of why is also in a language you cannot read yet.

We keep the exam material exactly as the exam gives it: Dutch, at the real level, at the real pace. Everything around it — the reasoning, the grammar note, the study plan — is available in English, French, Arabic and Turkish.
